UPAVIM
is a base organization that has thirteen years of experience in
the development of a variety of programs for the collective benefit
of the population of La Esperanza, a marginalized area of Guatemala
City. The organization has worked arduously to improve the situation
of poor women and their families, and has become a beacon of opportunity
and hope in this community. Their programs:
|
Generate
employment
-- UPAVIM
has created well-paid jobs with flexible hours for approximately
sixty women.
Address
health care needs
-- UPAVIM offers
medical and dental services, laboratory, pharmacy, and courses
in preventative medicine, and;
Provide
educational services for adults and children
-- the members of UPAVIM, many of them barely literate when
they joined the organization, have struggled
to continue their studies and some of them are today students
in university.
|

In
2002 UPAVIM opened the Center for Alternative Learning,
a primary school with local teachers trained in the Montessori
method.

charge a low price.
These programs
are supported by craft sales and other
income generating projects as well
as international
